How to Write Personal Ceremony Vows

You probably think this is a difficult task. What should you say in your personal wedding vows??? But it is easier than you think! Just follow these 5 steps!!

I want to discuss 2 considerations before diving into the vows!

First, is your fiancé willing to do this as well? If your fiancé prefers more of a traditional repeat after me style, then no point in writing your own vows! The second consideration is don't procrastinate!! Be sure to have your vows written and finalized a week before the ceremony!

Above all, remember that at the heart of every wedding vow is the idea that you’re making a pact. Vows should have three distinctive features: a declaration of love, promises for the future and some personal touches. Use language that is as simple and natural as possible. No one is asking you to be the second coming of Shakespeare. Nor do we want you to try.

5 Steps to writing your personal ceremony vows!!!!

1. Who is your partner to you? Example: You are my best friend, my gym partner, my drinking buddy, my lover, my shoulder to cry on, my rock when things get tough...

2. What do you love most about your partner? Example: I love when you smile and how it conveys your exact thoughts at that moment, I love your deep belief in me as a person and as a partner...

3. What do you promise? Example: I promise to try and see things from your point of view, I promise to try and focus on the details, I promise to continue our efforts to build a relationship founded on a deep respect for each other...

4. When do you promise? Example: I promise these things today and forever, when things are easy and when they’re hard, for as long as we live…

5. Sprinkle in some humor and personality!! Example: I love that you let me be me: Grumpy and sarcastic, I love that you become a Yankees fan only during the playoffs, I promise to limit my shoes to what can fit in the closet...

Now put it all together!! Here are sample vows from the examples above:

Joe, you are my best friend and my rock when things get tough. I love your deep belief in me as a person and as a partner. I promise to continue our efforts to build a relationship founded on a deep respect for each other. I promise to limit my shoes to what can fit in the closet. I will be by your side and support you when things are easy and when they are hard, now and forever.
